Approximately 16 kilometers of the Kyiv capital city, up the Dnieper river, you can find an enchanting settlement mentioned by Konstantin Bagryanorodny as one of significant towns. It is ancient Vyshgorod, almost of the same age as Kyiv. The town is located on a high hill; in the ancient times it had powerful fortifications and performed the functions of the advanced post of the Mother of Rus’ towns in the north.
The first mention of Vyshgorod in the chronicles can be found as far back as in year 946 : “Be bo Vyshegorod Volzin town”, which means that the town was the independent principality of St. Olga, her favorite place and town, of which she cared much.
The centuries-old common history established a firm relation between Vyshgorod and the capital city and today the town with its unique aura is rather considered as one of Kyiv’s districts.
